About Wilkes County
Wilkes County was established in 1778 and is part of North Carolina’s mountain region with a population of 65,969. The area is home to many street festivals and arts and craft fesitivals including world renowned Merlefest. Merlefest is held yearly at Wilkes Community College and has featured popular music artists such as Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Nickel Creek, and the founder of the festival, Doc Watson. What began as a local bluegrass festival has grown into a must attend event for music lovers of all ages.
